Dashavataram

Dashavataram refers to the Ten Avataras or incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Dasha in Sanskrit means ten and avataram means incarnation or embodiment. Lord Vishnu is one of the Three Holy Trinities of the Hindus – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva (Maheshwara).

Lord Vishnu has taken different births on the Earth (Bhuloka) to guide the human beings on the path of righteousness and virtuous living. The progressive nature of the avataras or incarnations also provides an insight into the Evolution of Human Life. The Ten Avataras of Lord Vishnu are mentioned in the Hindu Puranas. They are Matsya (Fish), Koorma (Tortoise), Varaha (Boar), Narasimha (Man-Lion), Vamana (Dwarf), Parashurama (Brahmin Warrior), Rama (Ideal Human Being), Balarama (Shesha, the Serpent), Krishna (Universal Supreme Being), and Kalki (in Kali Yuga).
