Dr. Hemant Mehta (1931-2020) was born in Gujarat, India and grew up in Tanzania (then Tanganyika). He returned to India for his higher studies, studying at Baroda Medical College and qualifying as a doctor from Grant Medical College, Bombay. He moved to the UK for postgraduate studies, with his wife, Mrinalini, a gynaecologist, joining him a few years later. He trained at the Royal Eye Hospital, London and after various registrar posts in the UK, settled in North Wales in 1968, where he was appointed a consultant ophthalmic surgeon for the UK’s National Health Service. He developed several ocular and lid surgical procedures and pioneered day care eye surgery, blending plastic surgical technical into day-to-day ophthalmic surgery. He had many interests, including wildlife photography and was a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.
